Frequently Asked Questions about Kia Drive Wise from Kia Lovers
Features & Benefits
The vehicle uses a front-mounted camera or radar to detect an object in the vehicle’s path. Depending on the speed of the vehicle and the proximity of the object, there may either be an audible alert emitted to the driver (Forward Collision Warning) or the brakes may be applied by Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. This system may not detect all objects. As helpful as they are, Kia Drive Wise features are not a substitute for safe driving practices.
If you try to change lanes while an object is detected in your blind spot, including other vehicles, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist helps maintain your previous course by applying the brakes to the outer wheel to help return the vehicle to its lane.
Certain Kia models are equipped with a version of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist that is able to detect pedestrians and bicyclists.
Yes, Lane Keeping Assist will function on a single-lane road so long as there are clear lane markings on the road. If clear lane markings are not present, Lane Keeping Assist will not work.
As the vehicle approaches a detected object, Forward Collision Warning will alert the driver with audio and visual cues. However, if the object is very close, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may apply the brakes at the same time that the system gives audible and visual alerts, all in order to prevent or reduce the impact of a collision.
According to National Safety council studies, advanced driver assist features like those included in Kia Drive Wise, such as Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, have been shown to reduce the rate of accidents in vehicles equipped with them by up to 50%.  Additionally, vehicles equipped with features like Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Surround View Monitor, and Park Distance Warning-Rear have been shown to eliminate up to 78% of backing crashes. While many Kia Drive Wise features can help drivers stay safe, they are not a substitute for safe driving practices.
Technology
Kia Drive Wise utilizes a suite of different technologies to create a safer driving experience. This includes cameras, radar and sonar sensors, and audible and visual warning systems. These technologies also work together to help certain Kia Drive Wise features perform automated maneuvers.
Kia Drive Wise uses an integrated suite of technologies to improve the safety of passengers and to reduce the risk of collisions. This technology includes cameras, radar and sonar sensors, audible and visual warning systems, and certain Drive Wise features that can make automated maneuvers. These technologies work together to detect surroundings, and to help prevent and warn against potential collisions.
Some Kia Drive Wise features, such as Auto Emergency Braking Technology (Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist) and Highway Driving Assist can augment the driver’s control of the vehicle, including the steering wheel, brakes, and accelerator. However, the driver is always in control of the vehicle. As helpful as they are, Kia Drive Wise features are not a substitute for safe driving.
Using Drive Wise
Yes, Kia Drive Wise features can be disabled. However, disabling Drive Wise features is not recommended.
Certain Kia Drive Wise features are enabled by default upon purchase of a new Kia vehicle. Some of these features’ settings can also be adjusted by the driver. Certain functions require driver action, such as activating the Blind-Spot View Monitor or Highway Driving Assist. When enabled, some features are activated automatically based on conditions (i.e. without any driver action required), such as Auto Emergency Braking and Blind-Spot Collision Warning.Â
In most cases, the driver’s actions will override Drive Wise systems, including features like Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist. The one instance in which the driver cannot override Drive Wise is in the case of Auto Emergency Braking. Once the Auto Emergency Braking system is engaged, the driver cannot prevent the vehicle from stopping. As helpful as they are, Kia Drive Wise features are not a substitute for safe driving practices.
Kia Drive Wise features are only activated when they are needed. For instance, Auto Emergency Braking (Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist) will not be activated unless an immediate potential collision is detected. Other features are only activated by an action taken by the driver; for example, the Blind- Spot View Monitor only becomes active when the driver activates the turn signal above certain speeds. For more information on specific features, see the individual Drive Wise feature videos on this page or consult the owner’s manual.
